What is
Contained in the records
The following
is a description of what is contained in photocopies of the actual articles
referenced in the 1872 Voter Registrations and the three San
Francisco Call compilations: 1) Vital Statistics, 2) the 1886 G.A.R.
Convention Biographies, or 3) the 1892 "Days of '49" Sketches.
For the
San Francisco Call records the database entries only provide the name,
type of event, year of the event, age or spouse as appropriate, newspaper
date, page and column, and the database reference number.
The actual birth, marriage and death notices indexed by the Vital
Statistics webbase contain a wealth of additional information not
available on this site or in the database. That additional information, at a
minimum includes the place of the event which may not have been San
Francisco. Many of the records were for events throughout California, in
other states, or even in other countries or at sea.
-
Birth records usually don't contain much more than the place of the
event and name of the father, although occasionally the wife's maiden
name is provided.
-
Marriage records may also contain, in addition to the names of the
bride and groom, their previous residences, the name of the minister
performing the ceremony, and occasionally the names of parents.
- Death notices may also contain the birthplace, the age in
years-months-days, the parents, spouses or children's names, occupation,
cause of death, and funeral information. For the foreign-born
residents, some of the death notices include the village or parish
of birth in Europe. This is especially true of the Irish immigrants.
-
Divorce records contain the name of the presiding judge and the
reason for the decree.

Days of '49 Sketches
This web page provides the date and page in the San Francisco Call
newspaper where each sketch has been printed. The actual record will
provide additional information.
The 1872

registration, the year of the register (for a couple counties may have been
later than 1872), and the database reference number.
In addition to this information, the actual records will provide the
complete date of registration, the local residence in the county (street
addresses in large cities or the name of rural communities), and the
occupation.
